Balloon Sinuplasty Surgery: Here's What You Need To Know

Sinuplasty is a procedure that can surgically alter the sinuses, relieving pain, pressure, and blockages from these tender passages. The sinuses of the body are found in the bones of the face and forehead. These spaces in the bones allow human beings to breathe. For some people, the sinuses can be a huge cause for distress. For some reason, certain individuals are more prone to infections of the sinuses, a messy and often painful experience. What Is It?
Balloon sinuplasty is a procedure that is performed by an otorhinolaryngologist, or ear, nose, and throat doctor. This surgery works to widen the sinuses a small bit, in order to allow proper drainage. For some people, the sinuses can become blocked, which causes excessive pain and pressure. A sinuplasty gives doctors the space to clean out the sinuses.
How Does It Work?
A balloon sinuplasty works by a physician slowly inserting a special catheter into the sinuses. Once it is properly placed, a small balloon in the catheter is inflated. The inflated balloon then causes an increase of pressure in the sinuses, which in turn causes microfractures of the surrounding bone tissue. Sometimes these small fractures allow just enough space in the sinuses for physicians to remove any blockages or infections that may be present by flushing the area with saline.
Does It Hurt?
Patients who undergo the surgery have reported feeling sinus pressure as the balloon is being inflated, even with a local anesthetic. There may be some bleeding from the sinuses, since there are many tender mucous membranes that will be bothered during the surgery.
What Is The Recovery Time?
For the most part, people who get this sinus surgery completely recover after a day or two. As previously stated, there may be some bleeding and quite a bit of drainage, which can be unpleasant. Physicians usually advise patients not to blow their nose or apply pressure to the area for a few days, since it will be painful and could cause unnecessary strain.
