Smoother Skin: What You Should Know About Microdermabrasion

Adam Newman

With so many skin care treatments available today, it can be difficult to decide which one works best for your needs. There are countless laser treatments, chemical peels, and other dermatological breakthroughs being utilized today. Microdermabrasion is a good choice for many people who need to smooth their skin without harsh chemicals or really intensive treatments.

What is Microdermabrasion?

The process of microdermabrasion involves the application of a skin exfoliant coupled with a mild vacuuming process. Over time, this stimulates the skin cells and brings new ones up to the surface while also removing dead skin cells. As the cells regenerate, it also increases the blood flow which can result in smoother, softer skin. These non-painful treatments are performed by a dermatologist and typically last for approximately eight to ten sessions total in order to see results.

Who needs Microdermabrasion?

While this treatment is not for everyone, there are many instances where people would opt to use it. Some of these cases include:

  • People who have experienced changes in skin pigment due to sun damage
  • Patients with acne scarring or burn scars
  • Those who enjoy tanning (microdermabrasion can better prepare the skin to receive tanning treatments)
  • Helping smooth out areas of the skin where it has been raised from laser treatments
  • People that have wrinkles or aged skin and would like a smoother, firmer look

Is Microdermabrasion for Everyone?

While most people are good candidates for this type of treatment, some patients may need to avoid it. Those with diabetes should not receive these treatments. People who have current acne should not have microdermabrasion, as it can irritate it and possibly make it worse. Anyone experiencing skin cancer or undergoing skin cancer treatment should not have microdermabrasion. If you have areas of sunburn or have tattoos, those areas should not be treated. Talk to your physician and dermatologist before undergoing any kind of skin related proecdures to determine if these will work for you.

Where can you Have Microdermabrasion done?

In most cases, this treatment is done on the face since this is where most patients want to obtain smoother, softer skin. But microdermabrasion can also be performed on the hands to help reduce the signs of aging and lighten age spots. It can also be applied to the legs or arms where there are scars present in order to make them look more faded, and give the skin a smoother look.
